Christie Elliott insists Carlisle United are capable of beating anyone in League Two as they aim to bounce back at Cheltenham tonight.

The Blues lost at home to Mansfield on Saturday and, three days on, face Michael Duff’s Robins side at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium (kick-off 7.45pm).

Right-back Elliott conceded the Stags reverse was “massively frustrating” but has faith in Steven Pressley’s team to show what they are capable of.

He said: “Cheltenham will be a tough game, as every game in this league is.

“I think if we stick to what we’re good at we can beat any team in this league, and it’s important we get back to winning ways and get our confidence back to where it was after Barnsley [the 3-0 Carabao Cup win].

“It’s all about getting a run of consistency in any league, especially if you’ve got the ambition to finish at the top end of the table. We’ll be looking to put right what went wrong against Mansfield in the next few games.

“The good thing is that we’ve got a game quickly to put things right and hopefully get three points on the board.”

United’s last away game saw them end Barnsley’s long unbeaten home record under Daniel Stendel and they must deal with another daunting sequence in Gloucestershire tonight.

The Robins have not lost at home since January 12, a run of 11 unbeaten games. By contrast, Carlisle are seeking their first away league victory since January 26.

If boss Steven Pressley considers changes tonight it could bring the likes of Olufela Olomola, Hallam Hope and Elias Sorensen into contention.

Elliott, meanwhile, is one of a host of summer signings hoping to help Carlisle gain a foothold in this League Two campaign after one win and two defeats.

The former Partick Thistle man says he has not yet reached his peak but believes he will get better with games.

“I do feel like I’ve settled in, it’s a brilliant group and everyone within the club has welcomed me so well,” he said.

“The fans have turned up in their numbers at every game and it’s important we all stick together throughout the season.

“It [the English league] is totally new for me and it’s important I get up and running and at my best as quickly as possible.

“I think the levels in this league are similar to what I’ve been used to, and it’s all about which team wants it more on the day.

“Every team you play will want to win as much as you do so it’s important you stick to your own strengths.”

Elliott says he is “only just getting back” to sharpness after suffering a pre-season knock against Hibs.

The 28-year-old added: “When we get things right we’re a good team. Our aim is to produce more of the good stuff and get as many points as possible.

“We know we have a team that will do well, we just need to bring it all together.

“It takes time for a brand new team to gel but we’ve already shown how good we can play. As long as we improve and learn more game by game we’ll be fine.”

The defender is also looking forward to playing in front of United’s travelling fans again tonight.

They are unlikely to take as many as the 385 who travelled to Oakwell last Tuesday, given the 476-mile midweek round trip.

But Elliott said of their support home and away: “It’s massive because it feels like a twelfth man. When we got the first goal at Barnsley you felt an energy coming from them and that got us even more buzzing.

“It pushed us on to want to get more goals so it’s important that the fans do turn up because they give us confidence. Hopefully we’ll repay them by getting points on the board.”
