Carlisle United fans reacted on social media to the news of Paul Simpson's departure as Blues manager.

Here is a selection of their comments on X and Facebook.

We all wanted PS to turn it around and it is such a shame it had to end this way. He is a CUFC hero despite the bad times recently. Thank you Paul. We are in a much better position thanks to you. Let's build on your successes. Onwards and upwards. (@scholes_peter)

It's just a dying shame that the man that has done so much for this club, departs with the last public action of his walking down the tunnel, shaking his head at the treatment he received with a chorus of boos. Leam Richardson is my choice to step into his shoes (@dougrmurphy)

Always will be a legend of the club. So sad its ended this way although ultimately I think it was time (@MarkDen40725244)

He answered the call twice when were in the doldrums, the last Carlisle manager to achieve promotion for nearly 30 yrs. All the memories from his promotions, alas the realities of the football have resulted in a parting of the ways. Wishing him all the best! (@CowellLes1975)

You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain. Thanks for the memories (@mark_rothery)

Such a sad day, but it seemed inevitable in the end. Some of my best cufc memories have been with Simmo at the helm. Once the dust has settled, let's remember everything that he did for us, rather than how it ended. (@mikebcarilsle)

It would have been almost impossible to be promoted / relegated and promoted again in consecutive seasons so always felt we should have started afresh over the summer. Sure they could've found a role for PS then, rather than this messy ending. (@douglasbaptie)

We all wanted it to be Simmo that took the club to even greater highs after the play-off final. He was shown great patience last season, but the Piataks have spent big in two transfer windows now for no tangible results. As sad as it is, they had to act. (@coulthard_chris)

This is sad news, but not terribly surprising. Thanks to Paul Simpson for all he did to save the club from relegation to the Conference and for changing the mood around the club when things looked pretty grim. (@JohnRMiller16)

Don't feel like this is the correct decision - would be nice to give him time to see if this team gels. Especially given the way some fans boo'ed him off today, thought that was rather disrespectful. Hope Simmo knows he'll be remembered for the good times. (@jamescrooks)

It's sad that it hasn't worked out but no manager has been given so long to turn things around. We have been patient & supportive. Simmo will always be a legend & be welcomed back with open arms. It was just frustrating to not see any improvement (@adydent67)

He’s a good man and a club legend. The last year has been tough but the current team is less than the sum of its parts. We need to turn a corner and hope the new manager can do that. Wonder if the door will ever be open for him to return in some position? (@RichM996207)

Sad to see this. Felt he deserved a couple more games after the window at least. Such a nice guy and has given Blues fans some incredible times. We’d be Conference now if not for Simmo. Let’s hope the change has a positive effect (@tim_martland)

Simmo will always be a Carlisle legend but the situation had become untenable. Thanks for the memories but time to start afresh. (@sirstanley129)

Never nice to see someone lose their job, good luck Simmo and thanks for giving me my best moments following the Blues (@BrendanRogers69)

A fresh approach might well be needed but it doesn't make it any easier to hear. Sad times indeed. Really hoped they could pull the results together. (@ShazCaton)

Needed to happen, but sad for Simmo. Will always be a club legend. (@Marzy_1)

It's for the best (@carlisl9125)

Thank you so much Paul for everything. Devastated but hope you get a well-deserved break from it all. (Lucy Smith)

Hope the effort that people made on here to get him gone put the same effort into supporting the new manager who ever that may be (Steven Mclean)

The right time really. Simmo deserves a lot of respect from all of us. It's good that we can remember what he achieved, rather than the negatives. (Fred Gill)

The right thing to do now is to give thanks for everything that Paul Simpson has achieved at our club. There aren’t many managers who will have achieved 3 promotions with the same club. While I agree that the right decision has been made I feel that the club statement doesn’t go far enough to recognise how much of a contribution Simmo has made to our club. Nothing more than the customary platitudes that accompany any manager’s dismissal. But Simmo is not just any manager. Unfortunately, the decision needed to be made because the results and performances have been in steady decline for a long time. There is no doubt in my mind that a new manager with a different approach can get a lot more out of this group of players. (Justin Moor)

IMO there will only ever be one Paul Simpson.. he gave us hope and memories we will never forget. Thank you (Robin Hill)

Thanks Paul, I think you'll always be regarded as a legend at the club - good luck in your future career, would love to see you back involved with the club at some point in the future... Cheers (Graeme Porthouse)

He did his best but he was not getting the results time for him to go all the best Simmo for the future (Don Donaldson)

Nothing against Simmo got nothing but respect for the man but it was time to go time for some fresh ideas (Amy Smith)

Thanks for the memories Simmo, gutted it had to end this way. Although the time was right (Martyn Tinning)

Think we all need to act with dignity here, agree it was time to go but remember what he did and let him go in peace. Thanks Paul for everything. (Michael Little)

Had good times under Simmo. And will always remember them fondly. Good luck for the future, whatever it brings. (Matt Young)
