Paul Simpson says Carlisle United must show their “resilience” as they bid to move on from their FA Cup disappointment.

The Blues boss says his side have already responded well to setbacks this season.

And he wants them to call on that quality again in the wake of their 2-1 defeat to Walsall on Saturday.

United are now left to focus on the league with a Brunton Park double-header coming up against Sutton United and Barrow on consecutive weekends.

It is vital they head into their next challenges in the right frame of mind, manager Simpson says.

“The thing we’ve done well this season is we’ve moved on,” he said.

“Once a game’s gone, whether it be a defeat, draw or win, we’ve moved on and we deal with the next one.

“The next one is a really good game at home.

“I am really disappointed that we’re out of the FA Cup, I wanted to be in it, to keep going.

“We’re not because of our own doing and we’ve got to make sure we dust ourselves down and we’re ready to go again next weekend at home.”

While Walsall will learn their third round cup opponents tonight – with Premier League clubs coming into the competition at this stage – United now return their attentions to their League Two campaign.

They sit sixth in the table as they prepare for their December fixtures.

Simpson played down the idea of using Saturday’s frustration as further motivation to kick on in the fourth tier.

“I’ll be honest, I don’t actually care what they use as fuel,” he said.

“You shouldn’t need hurt. You should have a desire. They’ve shown a desire all season, so [Saturday was] a big disappointment.

“We wanted to be in the draw for the third round, there’s an excitement that goes with it. Now there’s a big anti climax feel that we’ve thrown it away.

“We’re all hurting, so it will certainly hurt the players. In football the test is always can you bounce back when you’re feeling this way?

“That’s where our next challenge comes. We have to show a resilience, which we have shown over the whole of the season, to make sure we do bounce back."
