Former Carlisle United goalkeeper Joe Fryer has landed a new coaching role.

The 26-year-old, whose playing career was badly affected by a serious injury he suffered whilst on loan with the Blues, has been appointed academy goalkeeping coach at Middlesbrough.

It sees Fryer return to the Teesside club, having come through their academy ranks as a player and more recently coaching on a part-time basis.

The former United loanee said he hopes to help a new generation of goalkeepers at the Championship club.

"It's great to be back here, although it doesn't really feel like I've been away," Fryer told the Boro website.

"The club has been fantastic with me, right through from being in the academy to the brilliant support when I was injured.

"I want to help our young goalkeepers the same way that the club helped and worked with me as a young player."

Fryer's career badly affected in August 2018 when, after a bright start to a loan spell with Carlisle, he suffered a serious leg break during his sixth appearance against Crewe Alexandra at Brunton Park.

Fryer, who had previously been on loan with Hartlepool United and Stevenage, was sidelined for nearly two years due to the double fracture.

Upon recovering, Fryer returned to the Blues in the summer of 2020 for a trial spell, before signing for Swindon Town.

He went on to make four appearances for the Robins before leaving the club in January last year.

That proved the end of his playing days with the popular Chester-le-Street-born keeper now focusing on coaching.
