Carlisle United have fitness doubts on both their main frontmen ahead of this weekend’s trip to Newport County.

Omari Patrick went off with a tight hamstring in the first half of last night’s Papa John’s Trophy game against Fleetwood Town.

And top scorer Kristian Dennis is nursing a similar problem, manager Paul Simpson revealed.

United’s boss hopes both will be fit for the League Two trip to south Wales.

But he said both will have to be monitored closely in the build-up.

On Patrick’s withdrawal in the 39th minute last night, Simpson said: “He just opened up down the left hand side, then turned to me and said, ‘I’ve just felt my hamstring tighten up there’.

“I said, ‘Right, don’t run, stay where you are and we’ll get you off’.

“I wasn’t prepared to take any chances. I spoke to him at half-time and the end of the game and he said, ‘I think I got off before there was any damage’.

“I’m hoping that’s all it is, but we’ll assess it [today] and see how he is.

“When it’s hamstrings you can’t take chances. We just have to see how he is. It’ll be really disappointing if he does have to drop out because I think he’s getting better and better with games and his fitness building up.”

Seven-goal Dennis was not involved in last night’s squad with Simpson saying the in-form striker is nursing a similar problem.

“It’s just a little bit of tightness in his hamstring. But he didn’t feel it in the game [against AFC Wimbledon] on Saturday,” the manager said.

“No idea where it’s come from. It’s not something he’s had before.

“He’s getting better and better as the week’s going on. I’m really hopeful. And he’s hopeful come Thursday he’ll be fine.”
