Jamie Devitt has signed a new deal to stay at Carlisle United.

The midfielder has agreed terms on a one-year contract.

It sees the popular player signed up at Brunton Park on the eve of the new season.

Devitt has been training with the squad all summer in a bid to prove his fitness and convince Paul Simpson he was worth a contract.

Now, after negotiations this week, the 32-year-old has committed to the Blues for the 2022/23 campaign.

He is now set to be in the squad for the League Two curtain-raiser against Crawley Town at Brunton Park.

Devitt has featured in most of United's pre-season friendlies and Simpson revealed this week he had tabled an offer to the player.

The deal was said to be heavily linked to Devitt's appearances in the side, and United's boss told the media yesterday he was "very hopeful" of an agreement.

Simpson has spoken favourably about Devitt's character and value to the team and squad at Carlisle.

He says the midfielder - who had rejoined United from Barrow on a half-season deal in January - is someone other players can look up to.

Simpson said: "I took him on loan when I was at Shrewbury and he was 17-18, and we finished on really bad terms.

"We had a joke about it when I first came in last season. I've never even thought any more of it since then, but he mentioned it to me other day.

"He said, 'After what happened when I was 18, I want to finish on a high'.

"I said I had never wasted my time thinking about it because he was a young lad and made a mistake.

"But I like him as a personality, like his ability on the grass, and he's a great person to have around.

"Even though he’s not a captain, he’s somebody who leads by example and he’s a good example for younger players to look up to."

The deal completes Devitt's Blues comeback, with the player's initial spell, from 2016-19, seeing the ex-Morecambe and Hull City man make 130 appearances and score 22 goals.

After moves to Blackpool, loans to Bradford City and Newport and a permanent switch to Barrow, his return to Carlisle last season brought seven outings.

He was influential in Simpson's early games in charge - starting four under the Cumbrian, having been a sub in three under Keith Millen - before injury cut short his campaign and dashed his chances of a deal at the end of the season.

Simpson, though, invited Devitt to train in pre-season and make his case for a contract.

His outings this summer included a hat-trick against Kendal Town while he has also figured against Workington Reds, Bolton Wanderers, Greenock Morton, Livingston and Morecambe.
