Morecambe boss Derek Adams was happier with his side's defending than attacking in their draw with Carlisle United.

The goalless draw at the Mazuma Stadium brought both sides' pre-season friendlies to a close.

United were often on top against their League One hosts.

But Adams said he had been trying out different things tactically in the game.

And he was pleased with Morecambe's clean sheet.

He said: "I think defensively we were good.

"Offensively we can do better, there's no doubt about that, but we're lacking in a bit of numbers and creativity in that area."

Adams said Morecambe got a test from Paul Simpson's side - in line with his expectations throughout the Shrimps' pre-season.

"We picked opposition in the pre-season that were gonna test us," he told his club's media channels.

"That's certainly what's happened with Huddersfield, Middlesbrough, Chester to a certain extent, Macclesfield and today in Carlisle."

While United face Crawley in their League Two opener next weekend, Morecambe take on Shrewsbury Town at the start of their second season in the third tier.

Adams added: "Pre-season games are about getting players minutes, trying to get through it without any injuries, and that's what the six games have accomplished for us.

"It [against Carlisle] was one of these games where we played a different formation. We want to give players every opportunity to play in different formations.

"We've played 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3, we played in a diamond the other night, and we played with a three today.

"It's given them all that benefit. They can study themselves, watch the clips and be ready for the start of the season."
