Carlisle United have made Fulham midfielder Sonny Hilton their third summer signing.

The 21-year-old has signed a season-long loan deal with the Blues - and joins Owen Moxon and Tomas Holy as their summer additions to date.

Hilton, who was born in Liverpool, began his career with Tranmere Rovers.

His performances on Merseyside drew attention from a number of clubs, but it was Fulham who won the race for his signature in the summer of 2016.

He initially teamed-up with the Cottagers' under-16 side but quickly progressed into the under-18 setup.

A loan move to Finnish side TPS Turku gave Hilton some valuable senior experience across three months in 2021, and he was named as Fulham's under-23 captain on his return to London.

And the youngster played a key role as the Craven Cottage outfit lifted the Premier League 2 Division 2 title last season - scoring nine times and providing 12 assists.

There has also been international recognition for Hilton, who has turned out for England's youth squads.

It was there he first encountered Simpson - who is excited to see what the youngster can do at Brunton Park.

"He’s a really talented footballer, but also a great lad as well," said the Carlisle boss, speaking to Carlisle's official website.

“I enjoyed working with him and I heard he was available for a loan for the coming season a few weeks ago. He had a really successful season with the 23s at Fulham last time out and they feel he’s ready.

“His numbers in terms of assists and goals were as good as it’s been, and I want players like that in the club.

"I like young, hungry and talented footballers and, like I say, I want that type of player in the building.”
