CARLISLE UNITED will be not be involved in a relegation battle again this season.

That’s the view of the Blues’ latest signing, goalkeeper Tomas Holy, who joined last week on a two-year deal.

The 30-year-old joins Paul Simpson’s squad from Ipswich Town, following a three-year spell at Portman Road which included loans last season at Cambridge United and Port Vale.

Holy is well aware of the upturn in form that United experienced on Simpson’s return, where the Blues won eight of their final 15 matches – and believes that puts his new side in a strong position to have a good season.

“They definitely don’t want to be fighting to stay in the division again this time,” he told the club’s website. “I know they want to fight for promotion and that’s why I want to be part of this club.

“We never know, nobody knows, but I can speak for myself and I know I’ll do my best on and off the pitch. Hopefully there will be a whole bunch of players singing the same note.

“I don’t go anywhere just be stuck somewhere. I go to fight for results and for promotion, that’s always my target. It’s as simple as that.”

Holy found himself out of favour in his final season at Ipswich, and is looking forward to having a run in the team having signed as Simpson’s first choice.

“Playing football is what I want to be doing. Money is nice, of course, but when I started playing football as a little kid I played because I love it,” he said.

“I still do, even though I need to sleep somewhere and eat, so it’s about making a living as well. I want to enjoy the passion and the atmosphere out on the pitch, and not on the bench or from the stand.

“And with it being a two-year deal it makes me calm. I can stop thinking about where I’m going to be, or is this or that going to happen, and is it going to be good.

“Now I know I’m safe and in a very good place, and now I can make another step forward and get sorted with moving here, and stuff like that, so I’m ready for the new season.

“I’m going to be enjoying football again, and I think that as long as I’m enjoying it, we’ll get results.”
