TAYLOR CHARTERS is confident he can be a big part of Paul Simpson's plans for Carlisle United next season.

The midfielder agreed a one-year deal with the Blues after spending half of the season on loan at Gateshead.

The 20-year-old was part of Mike Williamson's side which achieved promotion to the National League, making 22 appearances and scoring four goals. Now, he hopes to replicate that form in a blue and white shirt as he returns to Brunton Park.

“I’m really happy to get it all signed,” he told the club website. “I obviously knew I’d been offered a deal at the end of the season so I was really excited to get it done.

“I’m just looking forward to getting going now. I’ve been here since I was eight and I want to play as many games in the first team as possible. I think I can really kick on this season.”

Charters has 38 appearances to his name as a Carlisle player, and he's keen to add to them knowing he is a better player for his experiences on Tyneside.

“I think going on loan was good for my development,” he said. “I wanted to go out, and the manager at the time thought it would be good for me as well.

“It’s given me good experience of regular men’s football and I think it’s proved that I can do it at a good level. I’ll hopefully be able to replicate that in League Two this coming season.

Charters played the majority of his games at full-back in his spell at Gateshead International Stadium, and revealed that Simpson sees him perhaps fulfilling a similar role as he looks forward to a season in League Two.

He said: “I know Simmo came to the Chorley game and I think he’s watched a few clips of me as well from the last couple of years.

“He’s probably seen me play in a couple of different positions, which is why he wants me to think about being the type of player who can do that.

“I spoke to him on the phone when he told me I was being offered a contract and he said he sees me as either a left wing back, midfielder or even a left winger, so that gives me versatility.

“I think he’ll just be looking for hard work and the quality to go with it as well. To be honest, being able to play a couple of positions will only help me going forward in my career.

“As long as I can get on the pitch, it doesn’t matter where I’m playing. I’ll always try and help the team as best as I can and hopefully do well in whatever position I’m playing."
