Cumbrian goalkeeper James Trafford has earned his first England Under-21 call-up.

The Manchester City player, from Greysouthen, has been named in the squad by head coach Lee Carsley for a series of Euro qualifiers.

It rewards Trafford, 19, for an impressive loan spell at Bolton Wanderers in the second half of last season.

And it puts the young Cumbrian in line for further international honours, Trafford having already played for England Under-20s and at other age group levels.

The former Carlisle United academy player, who joined Man City aged 12, is joined in the squad by Premier League stars such as Arsenal's Emile Smith-Rowe and Everton's Anthony Gordon.

His fellow goalkeepers in the squad, for the fixtures against the Czech Republic, Kosovo, Albania and Slovenia next month, are Stoke City's Joe Bursik and Brighton & Hove Albion's Carl Rushworth.

Trafford made 22 appearances for Bolton last season, having joined the League One club on loan from City following a previous spell with Accrington Stanley.

Bolton - who face Carlisle United in pre-season - are keen to bring the Cumbrian back to the club for the 2022/23 campaign.

Carsley's Under-21s, who are second in their qualifying group, go to the Czech Republic on Friday, June 3.

They then take on Albania at Chesterfield on Tuesday, June 7, then go to Kosovo on Friday, June 10.

Next is a home clash with Slovenia on Monday, June 13 at Huddersfield.
