Jarrad Branthwaite took his Premier League appearance tally into double figures in Everton's heavy defeat to Arsenal.

The teenage Cumbrian was recalled after suspension by Frank Lampard for the Toffees' final game of the Premier League season.

But Everton went down to a 5-1 hammering at the Emirates Stadium.

Wigton star Branthwaite had sat out the dramatic 3-2 midweek victory over Crystal Palace which secured Everton's top-flight safety.

That followed the first red card of his career against Brentford.

But the ex-Carlisle United defender, 19, went straight back into the side for the game against Mikel Arteta's Gunners and played the full 90 minutes.

It was Branthwaite's sixth Premier League start, tenth top-flight outing and 13th Everton appearance in total since his move to Goodison Park from Carlisle in January 2020.

But Lampard's side were subjected to a thrashing in north London.

Gabriel Martinelli's penalty and an Eddie Nketiah strike but the hosts in charge.

Then, after Donny van de Beek pulled one back, further goals in the second half from Cedric Soares, Gabriel and Martin Odegaard completed Arsenal's victory.

Everton finished 16th in the table and Lampard said the club must give supporters a better season in 2022/23.

"We need to go away and hopefully give them a team that isn't in a similar situation next season," he said.

"That's on us. We can affect that and that'll be our job going forward."

Branthwaite, who turns 20 next month, is under contract at Everton for another three years, with the option for a further year.

This season he also scored his first Premier League goal in a 1-1 draw at Chelsea.
