One of Carlisle United's new League Two opponents in the 2022/23 have appointed a new manager.

AFC Wimbledon, who were relegated from the third tier last season, have confirmed ex-Charlton Athletic man Johnnie Jackson as their new boss.

He is the permanent successor to Mark Robinson, who left the club in March.

Jackson, 39, left Charlton earlier this month and has quickly secured his next position.

He has signed a two-year deal at the club who are preparing for life back in League Two after six years in the division above.

Jackson, speaking on the Wimbledon website said: "I cannot wait to get started.

"I am extremely familiar with the AFC Wimbledon story and have total respect for what the fans have achieved - especially the marvellous new ground.

"AFC Wimbledon and The Cherry Red Records Stadium don't belong in League Two and I'll be doing everything possible to get us back up again."

Jackson will be assisted by his former Charlton coach and ex-Yeovil Town man Terry Skiverton.

Wimbledon's relegation from League One means a new ground for Blues fans to visit next season, with their Cherry Red Records stadium at Plough Lane having opened in November 2020.

United last faced Wimbledon at their former Kingsmeadow home back in February 2016.

There could be further managerial news in the offing in Carlisle's division, meanwhile, with fellow Cumbrians Barrow hoping to close in on a successor to Phil Brown.

The Bluebirds yesterday announced they had approached a club for permission to speak to their top choice for the role.

They have not named the club or candidate, but Bolton coach and ex-Barrow player Sam Hird has been strongly linked, along with other names such as FC Halifax Town's Pete Wild and Gateshead's Mike Williamson.
