Paul Simpson is demanding a much-improved performance from Carlisle United today if they are to grab their survival chance.

Victory at Walsall coupled with an Oldham defeat to Northampton would mathematically complete Simmo’s rescue job.

But the manager says only a significantly better display than United produced against Exeter last weekend will do.

Ahead of the Good Friday clash, Simpson said: “It’s the next game, it’s important for that and also because we didn’t get the last one right.

“We can also put any worries of relegation straight out of the window.

“I don’t think anybody has ever been relegated with 50 points, and if other results go our way it’s definitely mathematically sorted.

“We have to go and do it properly. Whoever is selected has to go out and put in a much better performance than we did against Exeter.”

United will be backed by another strong travelling support at the Banks’s Stadium as they take on Michael Flynn’s Saddlers, who are level on points with Carlisle, ten above the drop zone.

The hosts are winless in four and have lost their last three, while Carlisle are seeking a first win in four.

Simpson says he has asked his side to be better in some particular aspects of their game today.

“There were a lot of things that weren’t quite right last weekend,” he said. “The biggest thing was we weren’t able to pass the ball as well as I would have liked to.

“I don’t think we were as front-foot mentality as we have been.

“I’ve looked at all those things, the training this week has been geared towards being better on the ball, being a bit more positive and attack-minded, ready to take into the Walsall game.

“We can’t change the Exeter game, we can only make sure we’re better going into Walsall because that’s the most important one now.”
