When Blues fans look back on this season, Jordan Gibson’s goal last Saturday could well be the defining moment – the instant the feel-good factor returned to Brunton Park.

United’s form has picked up in recent weeks but the 2-0 win over Bradford City not only lifted them six points clear of the relegation zone but had supporters, once again, believing in their team.

It was like a massive weight had been lifted and for the first time in a long while fans had a spring in their step as they made their way home.

The Blues were unrecognisable from the side boss Keith Millen took over just a couple of months ago.

Then they could hardly string a pass together. Against Bradford they turned on a polished performance capped by two excellent goals.

Gibson’s effort from the edge of the penalty area was one to savour. The move started with Callum Guy’s exquisite 35 yard cross-field pass that reminded an ‘old-timer’ like me of Chris Balderstone in his heyday (okay, perhaps I’m getting carried away!).

Jack Armer controlled well and neatly played the ball inside to Gibson who jinked past his marker before firing the Blues into a 45th minute lead with a strike that must be a firm contender for goal-of-the-season.

United dominated the second half with striker Omari Patrick, marking his second debut, by sealing the win with a late solo goal that demonstrated both his physicality and pace.

It was the Blues' fourth win in five league games and has raised fans' expectations. But Millen and his players will know you are only as good as your last performance.

At the very least, though, they have given us hope to replace the despair that was felt by many after a miserable start to the season.

CUOSC wants to say a big thank you to fans who donated items to our foodbank appeal before the Bradford game – you were very generous. Everything was taken to Carlisle Foodbank who try to provide three days of emergency food for people in crisis.

Don’t forget we will be holding our regular supporters’ surgery before Saturday’s home game with Crawley. It is in the study centre, next to the club shop between 1.30-2.30pm.

It’s a chance to ask questions or to join up. It costs £10 for an adult for one year or £5 for seniors or Under 18s.
