Carlisle United's supporters' trust have claimed there is "potential interest from various sources" in a takeover at Brunton Park.

But they said the debt situation remains a "main obstacle" to top-level change.

United owe more than £2m to Purepay Retail Limited.

Club bosses have long been involved in "succession" talks but there remains no sign of a resolution to the situation.

In a reply to a fan's question about their role in talks, published in a members' briefing, CUOSC said: "CUOSC are not the majority shareholder at the club so any decision to sell shares and achieve a takeover is not ultimately ours.

"However we are involved in the search for a solution to the ongoing issue of debt settlement, which is the main obstacle at present to full succession at the club.

"We are aware of potential interest from various sources but this interest can't be pursued until the debt issue is resolved satisfactorily.

"We have been the main agent for change at the club over the past 12 months and we continue to press for a resolution on a regular, ongoing basis."

In late July CUOSC said the succession and debt situations were likely to be resolved "in a few weeks".

It is now 15 weeks since that comment was made.

Last month United chairman Andrew Jenkins said the club were holding "regular" discussions "with a possible investor wanting to take over the club."

But CUOSC also recently claimed there was not a "settled position" on the succession situation among members of United's Holdings board.

Businessman Philip Day, whose Edinburgh Woollen Mill firm loaned over £2m to United before that debt was transferred to a linked company, Purepay, has long been linked with talks.

The trust, meanwhile, have confirmed that two of their board members have stepped back "for personal reasons".

CUOSC have not revealed which members of their hierarchy this refers to or given any further details of the reasons.

In a statement, the trust said: “Two members of the board have taken a back seat for a while due to personal reasons.

"We are not prepared to say any more on that at this stage out of respect for the individuals concerned.”
