Carlisle United 2 Everton Under-21s 0: Brad Young scored his first senior goals as Carlisle enjoyed a Papa John's Trophy victory in front of Brunton Park's second smallest crowd of all-time.

An official attendance of just 875 saw Aston Villa loan striker Young score in either half to account for Everton's Under-21s.

It was second only to the 859 who watched an Autoglass Trophy tie with Hartlepool in 1992 in the list of the smallest crowds at Carlisle's ground for a first-team game.

Young's brace took Carlisle to five points in Northern Group A on a night boss Chris Beech handed a first start to Jonathan Dinzeyi and a senior debut to 17-year-old striker Sam Fishburn, who came off the bench in the second half.

Beech made nine changes from the side that started at Sutton on Saturday, Arsenal loan defender Dinzeyi handed his debut with second starts for Young and Lewis Bell, as Lukas Jensen, Danny Devine, Zach Clough, Gime Toure and Morgan Feeney also came in, the latter captaining the side against his former club.

Everton threatened in the opening seconds as Rafa Garcia shot over the bar, before Taylor Charters was denied by keeper Jack Barrett at the other end.

Feeney was denied a close-range opener by the offside flag as Carlisle forced in after a set-piece scramble, with Everton's Lewis Dobbin denied by Jensen.

Young had further chances to open the scoring, meeting a low Clough free-kick with a firm shot that Barrett saved well.

After Toure fired over from outside the box, Young then saw a header from a Jack Armer cross saved by Barrett before scuffing the rebound wide from close range.

But the Villa loanee was not to be denied in the 44th minute when right-back Joe Riley crossed and Young neatly turned it past Barrett.

Young had a chance to double his tally after the break but shot across goal and wide, before Toure had an effort blocked after beating two men on the left.

Armer fired wide from distance and Ryan Astley glanced a header just wide for Everton.

United and Young then did get their second, the teenage striker steering a well-placed header past Barrett after Feeney had helped on a Riley long throw.

Manny Mampala and Fishburn then came off the bench, the latter back with United after his successful loan spell with Lancaster.
