Sutton United 4 Carlisle United 0: Carlisle United slumped to a dreadful defeat at Sutton as fans vented their anger at the team and boss Chris Beech.

The Cumbrians conceded twice in both halves and had sub Manny Mampala sent off on a miserable day in south London.

It was United's heaviest defeat for more than seven years in the league as pressure grew on head coach Beech.

The Carlisle boss later apologised to supporters and said: "I can't defend a performance or result like that. We've got to take responsibility for it."

Donovan Wilson, Alistair Smith (two) and David Ajiboye all scored for the EFL new boys - who would have had more goals were it not for Carlisle keeper Magnus Norman.

It sent United down to 17th in League Two with just two wins so far this season.

Even compared with recent poor displays it was a new low for the Cumbrians in 2021/22, who were totally outplayed by their hosts.

Beech brought Brennan Dickenson and Lewis Alessandra back into the side, Zach Clough dropped to the bench and Tristan Abrahams ruled out with a training-ground injury.

And the Blues made the worst possible start as they went behind on three minutes.

Wilson was at the near post to turn the ball home after Ajiboye had got the better of United on the Sutton right - though some felt it was a Corey Whelan own-goal as the Carlisle defender tried to cut out the cross.

The confident hosts threatened again as Ajiboye hit the outside of the post and ex-Blues striker Richie Bennett failed to convert a great headed chance.

United tried to come back into things midway through the half with Rod McDonald seeing a shot blocked and Jon Mellish denied by keeper Dean Bouzanis after good work from Jordan Gibson.

But Carlisle's threat was too intermittent, too many other attempts reliant on aerial and cross-field balls which failed to trouble Sutton.

Wilson volleyed narrowly over at the other end and Ajiboye almost broke through for another before Sutton did make it two.

And Carlisle were opened up on the left this time as Rob Milsom laid the ball into Smith's path, and he slid his shot past Norman.

Dickenson's cross just evaded the sliding Gibson for Carlisle while Joe Kizzi failed to convert a free header shortly before the interval.

The half-time whistle was greeted by boos from some of the travelling United faithful.

Mellish came close to pulling one back before Beech sent on Mampala for Kelvin Mellor in the 53rd minute.

Ajiboye almost got a Sutton third before Carlisle's sub was booked for a foul on Kizzi which led to scuffles between players.

Norman saved well from Wilson before Sutton, counter-attacking dangerously, made it three on 70 minutes, Smith slotting home after sub isaac Olaofe had got the better of Whelan.

And a minute later Mampala received a second yellow card for a challenge on Kizzi, ending his outing after just 18 minutes.

Carlisle failed to find a way back and then Ajiboye scored a deserved goal after getting behind United to the left.

The hosts were then turned down what looked like a stonewall penalty before a goal from Brad Young was disallowed for offside in front of 480 despondent travelling fans.

It was Carlisle's heaviest reverse in the league since the 5-0 loss at Cambridge in August 2014 and some fans are now calling for Beech's head.
