Workington Reds 0 Carlisle United 3: Zach Clough, Manasse Mampala and Taylor Charters got the goals as Carlisle United got the better of Workington Reds in their latest pre-season friendly.

Star summer signing Clough gave another reminder of his quality with the opener and then two assists.

Trialist frontman Mampala did his cause no harm with an excellent finish for Carlisle's second at Borough Park.

And west Cumbrian midfielder Charters completed the scoring with a well-taken effort in the second half, in front of a 748 crowd.

United's new trialist keeper George Sykes-Kenworthy had no saves of note to make despite Reds' best efforts through Dan Wordsworth and Brad Hubbold.

Mampala, Clough and Charters all came close to adding more goals as many of Chris Beech's squad played the full 90 minutes on a hot and sunny day in Workington.

United almost pounced in the first minute when ex-Everton and QPR man Mampala picked up a Wordsworth pass, but Workington recovered.

At the other end Reds' former Blues forward Steven Rigg got behind Morgan Feeney and cut in from the left, but saw penalty appeals dismissed by ref Anthony Backhouse.

United's pressing in their 4-3-3 system saw them almost take advantage again through Callum Guy, who shot wide, before Clough's cross somehow evaded Lewis Alessandra at the back post.

But Clough then made no mistake when picking up Hubbold’s under-hit pass and whipping a low shot past a rooted keeper Jim Atkinson in the 13th minute for his fourth goal in two games.

Wordsworth looped a header over in response for Reds while his fellow ex-Blues man Dave Symington tested the visitors down the home left, before captain Alessandra, on the break, overhit an attempted chip.

Clough then made his mark again on 35 minutes with a good cross which Mampala controlled and knocked around his man before rifling a fine left-footed finish past Atkinson from the centre of the box.

United went in at the break 2-0 up despite a Hubbold run which almost put in Scott Allison for Steven Rudd's side.

Reds made changes at the break before keeper Atkinson cut out a Jack Armer cross that was bound for Mampala.

The trialist forward then almost set up right-back Corey Whelan, who narrowly failed to connect with a diving header.

But moments later west Cumbrian midfielder Charters did make it three with a good run and finish from the left as Clough set him up after a well-worked attack.

Clough almost got a fourth but poked a low shot wide after deceiving Matty Clarke from an Alessandra cross.

Rod McDonald, in his first pre-season appearance after a recent slight injury issue, was then alert to see off an Iyrwah Gooden cross which was bound for Allison late on.

Meanwhile, another United XI claimed a 2-0 win at Hebburn Town.

New stiriker Tristan Abrahams got a goal in each half, the second from the penalty spot, to take his pre-season tally to three.

Brennan Dickenson made his first pre-season outing in the north east after injury, but Magnus Norman and Keelan Leslie remain sidelined.
