Former Carlisle United striker Gary Madine is set to face his former club this summer after signing a new deal with Blackpool.

The newly-promoted Tangerines - one of the Blues' pre-season opponents - have handed Madine new one-year terms.

It follows the Bloomfield Road club's return to the Championship after winning the League One play-offs.

Madine, 30, scored eight goals in 29 appearances last season and boss Neil Critchley is keen to have the former United man's experience in the second tier.

The striker said on the Pool website: “I’m really happy to extend my stay at Blackpool and to build on the recent success we have all been a part of.

“What the team achieved last season in gaining promotion was fantastic. Despite having a mixed season personally with injuries, I hope to be able to put that behind me now and really help this team push on in the Championship.

“We have a great bunch of lads here and a head coach who is brilliant to work for. I think some teams will be quite shocked at how well-drilled and efficient we will be next season, so I can’t wait for it to start.”

Madine rejoined Blackpool for a second spell in January 2020, after stints with Cardiff, Bolton, Coventry and Sheffield Wednesday.

That followed his emergence at Carlisle where Madine starred for Eric Kinder's youth team before scoring 22 goals for the first team, earning a move to Hillsborough in 2011.

He returned to the Blues for a loan spell in 2014.

Blackpool, whose squad includes another ex-Blue in Jerry Yates, are due to visit Brunton Park for a friendly on Saturday, July 24.
