Former Carlisle United defender Macaulay Gillesphey is returning to English football - with Plymouth.

The ex-Blues man has left Australian top-flight outfit Brisbane Roar after a two-year spell.

And the 25-year-old has sealed a return to the EFL with League One outfit Argyle.

Gillesphey, who had loan and permanent spells with United, is Plymouth boss Ryan Lowe's third signing of the summer.

The move will be sealed after the expiry of his contract Down Under.

Lowe, speaking on the Pilgrims' website, said: "I am delighted to finally welcome Macaulay to Argyle.

"We have been monitoring his situation for some time and keeping regular contact with his agent, and we’re really pleased to get this done.

"He has got some great defensive and attacking qualities and I am really looking forward to working with him."

Gillesphey first joined Carlisle on loan from Newcastle in the 2015/16 season, returning on loan for the following campaign when Keith Curle's side reached the League Two play-offs.

He then made a permanent move to Cumbria in 2018 for a further season under Curle's successors John Sheridan and Steven Pressley.

In total he made 93 appearances for United, scoring three goals.

His team-mates at Brisbane have included fellow former Carlisle defender Tom Aldred.

Plymouth finished 18th in the third tier last season.
