In today’s gallery, we look back on wholesome days of courage, bravery and determination at an important event in Carlisle.

The Race For Life has been held in Carlisle for many years to rapturous support and participation during the summer months.

Race for Life is, of course, a series of fundraising events, organised by charity Cancer Research UK. It involve running, jogging or walking a five-kilometre, 10-kilometre or ‘Pretty Muddy’ course and raising sponsorship for doing so. The money raises funds for cancer research in all 200 types of cancer.

This week, we look back on the fantastic efforts of so many in our community and beyond who ensured that this important cause could count the support of North Cumbria over the past ten years.

There is a range of delightful images which depict the unique sense of community that can be found in our region.

From back in 2011 we see Ruth Wilson, Julie Bushby, Gill Edmondson, Jackie Brown and Margaret Gate all from Agilisys running in support of friend Gill, alongside two participants who are pictured as they approached the finishing line, movingly captured arm in arm.

The fantastic support for the participants is clear in images such as one from 2014 where we see spectators and supporters waiting for their loved ones to cross the finishing line.

A real family event, we see that people of all ages were delighted to take part in the event, either as a runner or an onlooker, as we see in the picture featuring Teresa Shield, Deb Steele and Charlotte Parker, aged 7, from Brampton, 2017.

,This year, the event will take place in September.

The Carlisle route for this year’s spectacle starts and finishes in Bitts Park overlooking the magnificent Carlisle castle, and takes in a lap of the Sheepmount Sports Fields. The terrain is a mix of grass, road and pathways and is predominantly flat.

It will take place on Sunday September 2021 from 10.45am and is a 5k route.

Until then, if you spot yourself and have any memories to share of years gone by, please do get in touch with us!
