Carlisle United’s Callum Guy has been named in League Two’s team of the year by a leading football statistics site.

WhoScored.com rated Blues midfielder Guy as one of the top performers in the fourth tier in 2020/21.

He made their select XI which was compiled using a range of statistical measurements over the course of the campaign.

Guy’s average score based on those metrics was the highest of all the midfielders in the division.

And it put him second only to Tranmere striker James Vaughan overall.

While Guy controversially missed out on the EFL’s official League Two team of the season, his inclusion in the WhoScored XI cements his status as United’s top performer of 2020/21.

The 24-year-old, a multiple club player of the season award winner, was recognised for his influential passing, assists and his work off the ball.

Explaining their choice, WhoScored said of Guy: “Only [George] Thomson [of Harrogate Town] made more key passes than Carlisle's Guy (94) in the 2020/21 League Two campaign.

“Guy registered more assists (14) than any other player, and was exceptional off the ball, too, as he made more tackles and interceptions combined (215) to secure his place in this side.”

Guy’s overall rating was 7.30.

He was joined in the midfield by Thomson (7.11), Port Vale’s Tom Conlon (7.24) and Cambridge’s Wes Hoolahan (7.16).

Salford’s Vaclav Hladky (6.86) was rated the division’s top keeper.

In defence were Salford’s Ibou Touray (7.02), Bradford pair Anthony O’Connor (7.14) and Paudie O’Connor (7.21) and Newport’s Mickey Demetriou (7.17).

Up front were Vaughan (7.46) and Forest Green’s Jamille Matt (7.07).

WhoScored said their ratings were comprised by using more than 200 raw statistics.

There was no place in their XI for any player from champions Cheltenham, third-placed promoted side Bolton or fourth-placed Morecambe.

Cambridge’s Paul Mullin, the division’s runaway top scorer with 32 league goals, did not make the cut.

WhoScored L2 team of the season: Hladky, P O'Connor, A O'Connor, Touray, Demetriou, Guy, Conlon, Hoolahan, Thomson, Matt, Vaughan.
