South Africa international Dean Furman's spell with Carlisle United is over.

The experienced midfielder has not been retained by the Blues after the 2020/21 season.

He has been joined through the exit door by striker Cedwyn Scott - but the Blues are not ruling out taking a further look at the ex-Hebburn striker.

He has been invited to take part in pre-season training with the club ahead of the new campaign.

Furman was released after making just nine starts for United.

He made another 11 sub appearances after signing a one-year deal last summer, following a successful trial.

Furman, 32, was a respected figure at the club and regarded as a positive mentor for the younger players in the Carlisle squad.

But a lack of first-team outings has led United to let go the former Oldham and Doncaster player.

Scott, meanwhile, saw little first-team action after his January move from Hebburn Town.

The 22-year-old earned a deal with United after a winter trial, which followed his prolific scoring exploits in the Northern League.

Scott came to Carlisle after a trial with Newcastle.

But he made only a handful of brief substitute appearances.

The ex-Huddersfield striker came off the bench seven times under Chris Beech in the second half of the season.

Those outings amounted to about 53 minutes of action in total.

Beech said of the pair on the club website: "Dean is a great lad and probably up there with one of the best professionals I’ve worked with.

"You’d expect that from someone of his stature. He's captained his national team and played on that international stage, and fortunately for us those traits have influenced some of younger players throughout this season, and that’s been a big plus.

"By his own admission Dean hasn’t played as much football as he’d have liked this season. Those opportunities have been limited in the main by the tremendous run we went on in the first half of the season, and the form that Callum [Guy] showed playing in the slot that we brought Dean in to fill.

"He goes with my best wishes and I’ve no doubts that whatever he chooses to do next will be a success, because he has that attitude and professionalism about him.

"Cedwyn is another great lad who has worked extremely hard with us. It is open-ended with him.

"There is an invitation for him to join us for pre-season training, but we'll wait and see what happens with that and with what he wants to do as we step up for next season."
