Former Carlisle United boss Steven Pressley is back in football - in the Championship.

The ex-Blues manager has landed a post with promotion-chasing Brentford.

The London club have announced that Pressley will shortly join them as 'head of individual development'.

With Brentford set to compete in the second-tier play-offs after finishing third in the table, it could see the 47-year-old begin his new role in the Premier League.

It marks a return to coaching for the Scot since his sacking at Carlisle in November 2019.

Brentford - whose head of recruitment is another ex-Blues man in Lee Dykes - described Pressley's new position as "key".

They said his remit, once he takes up the role from July 1, will be to monitor the "individual development programme of Brentford’s high potential players."

It will see Pressley work with son Aaron, who is a member of Brentford's B squad and has made first-team appearances.

He will also be reunited with his former team-mate and assistant manager Neil MacFarlane, who is head coach of Brentford B.

In a statement, Brentford director of football Rasmus Ankersen said: “I am pleased that Steven will join us and help take our individual development programme to the next level.

"His experience both as a player and as a coach will be a big asset for our young players in their pursuit to reach their full potential.”

Head coach Thomas Frank added of Pressley: "He is a very experienced coach who thinks not only as a head coach but also in terms of the development of the team and of the players.

"He has experience of developing players over many years and his results are very impressive.

"We are looking forward to working with him and lifting the individual development of our players to another level, we want to be up there with the very best.”

Former Falkirk, Coventry, Fleetwood and Pafos boss Pressley was in charge of United for 10 months after being appointed as John Sheridan's replacement at Brunton Park in January 2019.

The Cumbrians slid out of the promotion race during his first campaign, before a poor start to the 2019/20 season saw the former Hearts and Scotland defender dismissed and replaced by Chris Beech.
