Former Carlisle United and Penrith star Steven Rigg is looking for a new club after leaving Dover Athletic.

The Cumbrian is one of a number of players to be released by the National League outfit.

The decision ends 28-year-old Rigg's two-year spell with the Kent-based club.

The Keswick man made 12 appearances this season, scoring once, after one goal in 32 outings last season.

It comes after a campaign which has seen Dover play just 15 league games, the Whites curtailing their campaign due to a lack of finances.

They are contesting a points deduction and fine imposed on them by the National League.

The club are set to go part-time next season.

Manager Andy Hessenthaler said of the decision to release Rigg among 15 players: “First and foremost I would like to thank each and every one of the players leaving the club for their efforts in what was an unprecedented season.

“I cannot speak highly enough of their attitudes and their commitment during what was an extremely difficult time for us a club.

“It is never an easy time for any manager, informing players they are being let go – it’s tough, but my job is to make these decisions however hard they might be.”

Rigg joined Dover in 2019 after a spell with Gateshead.

He had initially joined Carlisle in 2014 after a record-breaking goalscoring spell with Penrith.

The forward memorably scored on his debut in a 3-0 win at Hartlepool, one of six goals in his debut Football League season.

After leaving the Blues, he returned for a second spell in 2017 before moving on to Chorley and then Gateshead.
