Two former Carlisle United men are in temporary charge at Swindon after ex-Blues boss John Sheridan's departure was confirmed.

Sheridan's No2 Tommy Wright - also his assistant at Carlisle in 2018/19 - has been placed in caretaker control of the League One strugglers.

And he will be assisted by ex-United striker Lee Peacock, who is Swindon's head of academy coaching.

They will oversee first-team affairs for the rest of the season with the Robins close to relegation.

Sheridan told reporters: "I'm going to resign" after yesterday's miserable 4-1 defeat at AFC Wimbledon.

It left Sheridan's side at the foot of the third tier and seven points adrift of safety with four games to go.

The decision, now confirmed by the club, ends the 56-year-old's five-month tenure at the County Ground.

As reported by the Swindon Advertiser, Sheridan said he had informed his players he was going to leave the club after the game in south London.

He said: “I’ve just told the players I’m going to have a break now.

“I don’t think it’s doing my health any good – it’s not doing anyone’s health any good watching us with the way we’re getting beat week in, week out. It’s not right for the supporters or the club with the position we’re in.

“I’m sure a lot of people will be pleased, but that’s football."

Sheridan said he had also informed director of football Paul Jewell of his decision, and that he would be speaking to Swindon chairman Lee Power.

“While there are four games to go, hopefully someone can come in and work a miracle to try and help the team get a few results," he added.

His decision sees the ex-United man leave a fourth job in the space of 15 months, Sheridan having previously moved on from Chesterfield, Waterford and Wigan since January 2020.

Sheridan's reign had come under increasing fire from fans after the experienced boss failed to lead the Robins away from danger in League One.

The latest defeat was a fifth loss in a row and a ninth in 11 games, leaving Swindon on the brink of an immediate return to League Two after last season's promotion under previous boss Richie Wellens.

The former Republic of Ireland international was in charge at Brunton Park for the first half of the 2018/19 campaign before leaving for Chesterfield.
