Port Vale boss Darrell Clarke insists his team must bring their "A-game" to Brunton Park in order to claim a remarkable piece of club history.

The Valiants are aiming for a seventh straight win tomorrow against Carlisle United.

Incredibly, that would be their best such run since 1893.

But manager Clarke, who has led a turnaround at the club who were previously in relegation trouble, knows it will not be easy against Chris Beech's Blues.

On the historical landmark within reach for the Valiants, Clarke said: "We want to make good stats and that's a great stat to behold.

"I have mentioned it to the group. It would be a hell of an achievement, but we need to bring our A-game to Carlisle.

"If we do that we have every chance of winning the game."

Clarke commented on the volatile fortunes of Carlisle this season, the Blues having topped League Two by January 2 before sliding down the table, and recently recovering some form.

That January 2 date saw Beech's side beat a Walsall team that was managed by Clarke before his February switch to Burslem.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, he added of the Blues: "They had a real good start and middle bit, then went on a terrible run, but now have started to hit back [into] form again.

"They came to my Walsall team when they were flying high and had real good momentum, then they hit a brick wall.

"Chris will be pleased they are back in the hunt for the top seven."

Clarke added that his side must show they can deal with some of Carlisle's well-known traits in the Brunton Park clash.

"They're an aggressive team, a good second ball team, [play with] a high tempo and are a very fit team," he said.

"They ask you a lot of questions. They're top in the division for crosses in the box and there will be a lot of questions that will need answering.

"We've defended superbly over this spell and we're looking to put in another good defensive performance while being better on the ball, because we've got players that can hurt teams on the day.

"We'll have to be at our best to continue the winning run."
