Dean Henderson is to be kept waiting for his next England chance.

The Cumbrian goalkeeper is set to be on the bench for the national side's next two games.

Henderson, 24, is in the squad for a trio of World Cup qualifiers against San Marino, Albania and Poland.

But after Nick Pope got the nod for Friday's win over San Marino, boss Gareth Southgate confirmed the Burnley man will also play in the next two matches.

“Nick was always going to play the next games anyway,” Southgate said, when asked about Pope after Friday's routine 5-0 win over the minnows.

“He has been really patient for his opportunity and has performed consistently at a high level every week for his club, and has been with us for a very long time waiting for this moment.

“He is a very calm character and I really like his personality.

"We obviously knew he was not going to be overworked but I am sure that will be different in the next games.”

England face Albania today (kick-off 5pm) and Poland on Wednesday, with Henderson and Sam Johnstone the other keepers in the squad, regular No1 Jordan Pickford out injured.

Pope has yet to concede in his five England outings.

Whitehaven-born Manchester United keeper Henderson, who started at Carlisle United's academy, has one senior cap to his name so far.
