Tranmere boss Keith Hill said his side stood up to "extreme pressure" in their 3-2 win over Carlisle United.

Hill said the visitors prevailed in the face of difficult weather conditions and a tough United team.

James Vaughan's late goal inflicted only a third home league defeat of the season on the Cumbrians.

It saw manager Hill chalk up a second win over hisformer Rochdale No2 Chris Beech thei season.

After a game played in strong wind and heavy rain, Hill said: "We showed great spirit, there was a lot of skill on display, a lot of determination and desire under difficult conditions against an excellent side.

"I'm really pleased - although you [should] never get too high when you win or too low when you lose - with the result but more importantly the performance in possession against a very difficult opponent.

"We came under extreme pressure - psychological pressure, footballing pressure - but stood up to it. I've seen so many teams come here and fold in the first 20 minutes.

"For us to go behind early but show the determination to bounce back twice...they were marvellous goals and we defended superbly.

"You have to respect the opponent - they're very physical andhave excellent skill in forward areas, but we managed that as well as we possibly could."

The result saw Tranmere move up to fifth in the League Two table.

Hill, speaking to the club's official channels, added: "I thought we were brilliant under extreme weather conditions, and always had a threat on the counter with the pace and presence in our team."
