Carlisle United boss Chris Beech has confirmed the Blues will run the rule over non-league hotshot Cedwyn Scott next week.

The Hebburn Town player, who recently had a trial with Newcastle, is set to train with the Cumbrians.

Hexham-born Scott’s impending spell with United was reported by the Shields Gazette last night and, speaking at his press conference this morning, Beech said Carlisle were keen to take a look at the 21-year-old.

“He plays non-league football, but he’s been in with Newcastle for quite a long time, and played a couple of games for them,” Beech told the News & Star.

“If anybody local is at that level in terms of being very good in a non-league situation, we wouldn’t be doing our jobs if we weren’t looking at people like that.

“He lives in Hexham, so let’s have a look.”

Beech did not rule out assessing Scott in a reserve game, with United having a Central League Cup game against Fleetwood later this month on December 16.

“Maybe he could play in that,” Beech said.

“But sometimes you can know straight away in 24 hours if it’s worth pursuing or not. So we’ll see.”

Scott, who turns 22 on Sunday, started his career at Beech’s former club Huddersfield before a spell in Scotland with Dundee including loan moves to Berwick and Forfar.

He then returned to England in the non-league game at Dunston UTS before joining Hebburn in the Northern League in January.

He had a four-week trial with Newcastle last month, training with the Magpies’ Under-23s, and although the Premier League club did not offer Scott a contract, he is keen to step back into full-time football.

He has attracted interest from other EFL clubs after a prolific start to this season, and Hebburn manager Kevin Bolan told the Shields Gazette: “Cedwyn had a lockdown period with Newcastle and he had the benefit of a number of extra training sessions.

“We want to help him to the next stage, but we want these clubs to help us too.

“Newcastle did that and they were excellent with both Cedwyn and with our club.

“Now we want other clubs to take that care with him and with ourselves.

“Cedwyn absolutely loves it with us, he knows there is a Wembley trip around the corner for him.

“Maybe he could finish the season with us and then go somewhere else next season – we will have to wait and see.

“He is going to Carlisle United to train with the first-team next week and we know that there are other Football League and National League clubs are interested in looking at him.

“We don’t mind doing what we can to help Cedwyn – but we want the clubs to make sure we are supported by them.”

Scott helped Hebburn reach last season's FA Vase Final, with a date for the 2019/20 final against Consett at Wembley still to be confirmed after it was delayed due to Covid-19.

He will tomorrow be in action for Hebburn – where his team-mates include former Carlisle youngster Carl Taylor – in this season’s second round against North Shields.
