Scottish international Brett Phillips will add a wealth of experience to the Whitehaven squad in next year’s Betfred Championship, says assistant coach Jonty Gorley.

The strong-running forward has just signed a new deal with the Recreation Ground side and is looking forward to getting back into action.

And Gorley says keeping hold of the former Seaton Rangers amateur is a huge boost to the squad.

“It’s great to have Brett on board again for next season,” said Gorley.

“He brings a wealth of experience, having played in the Championship previously and also at international level with Scotland. Brett is a leader, talks well and someone who helps steady us on the pitch.

“Add to that his size, and how he plays the game, Brett is a massive asset for us.”

The 31-year-old joined Haven for the 2019 season having had a year out of rugby league.

He made his debut for Whitehaven at home to Keighley Cougars on February 17 that year and went on to make 22 appearances, scoring four tries.

Phillips said after signing his one-year deal: “I’m happy to sign for another year at Whitehaven. The squad looks to be taking shape nicely and I’m excited to get back to training.”

Phillips is the 23rd member to sign on to Gary Charlton’s squad as the club looks ahead to the 2021 Betfred Championship season.
