Reports concerning the future of some of Edinburgh Woollen Mill boss Philip Day’s businesses are not expected to affect their links to Carlisle United.

Business tycoon Day has appointed advisers to provide a valuation of the Peacocks clothing chain, which is part of Day’s EWM group.

This followed an unsolicited approach for Peacocks, while it was reported in The Sunday Times that the Edinburgh Woollen Mill chain could also be sold.

It is understood, though, that the valuation process focuses on the 550-store Peacocks chain alone.

And the process is not expected to directly impact the wider group’s financial backing of United.

Day’s firm have loaned Carlisle £2.1m since 2017 and have played an increased part in the club in recent years, with their group financial controller John Jackson also on the Blues’ holding company board.

EWM have long been linked with a major role in United’s future, although supporters’ trust CUOSC recently reported there had been no significant movement with “succession” talks at Brunton Park.

Billionaire Day attended Carlisle’s recent EFL Trophy game against Fleetwood, watching the game from the directors’ seats alongside director of football David Holdsworth.

Blues co-owner John Nixon claimed in February that EWM taking "a share and chunk of the club" was "on their radar" and that “succession” talks were now down to EFL “mechanics”.

There was further intrigue among United fans when it emerged Day was involved in the setting up of a new business called Eden Valley Sport Limited. Some have speculated that may be a vehicle that could be involved in future dealings with the Blues.

CUOSC recently said United have not drawn on EWM's "loan facility" for the last 12 months.

Day is based outside the UK and works between Switzerland, London and Dubai for business.

The Sunday Times claimed Day had “put both Peacocks and the Edinburgh Woollen Mill chains up for sale”, with the businessman having appointed the advisory firm FRP to sound out potential buyers.

They reported that the Covid-19 pandemic has affected EWM, “depriving them of the over-60s and foreign tourists on which it depends.”

EWM have not commented and Carlisle United said they had nothing to add.
