A RAZOR-CLOSE T20 game saw Cleator Cricket Club edge Whitehaven on Saturday.

Cleator Cricket Club’s first team edged their Whitehaven counterparts at the JD Campbell Memorial Ground in the Cumbria T20 Premier Division North West tournament, sponsored by Lukey's Sports.

Whitehaven batted first setting the bar high for Cleator, making 103 runs.

They were helped along the way by Jonathon Stewart making 25 runs, Chase Young putting up 20 and Lewis Keeler hitting 19.

Cleator racked up 106 runs in response with just four out thanks to Chris Quinn with 42 runs, James Hocking with 21 and Douglas Hughes 19.

Whitehaven’s James Rogers and Owen Bell both picked up three wickets and David Rooney picked up two. David Watson and David Blackwell both picked up one apiece.

Bowling for Cleator, Jonathon Stewart took two with Clark Pattinson and Chase Young both picking up one wicket.

Cleator won by six wickets, placing them in second on the Cumbria T20 Premier Division North West league table, below Cockermouth.

In another close-run game on Saturday, Egremont Cricket Club edged out Haverigg at the Gilfoot Park ground. Egremont’s seconds won the toss and elected to field.

Haverigg’s second team batted first, setting a competitive pace with 112 runs all out.

Top performers Kieran Rogan made 40 runs, Anthony Johnson made 18 and Thomas Crowther contributed nine.

In response, Egremont made 114 runs due in no small part to prospect Olly Wilford, who made a valiant 57 runs. The rest of the total was made up by Vickram Balakrishnan hitting 28, Lewis Hunter hitting 12 and Ian Littleton with nine.

Elsewhere in the Cumbria Cricket League T20 tournament, Keswick’s First Team topped Wigton by 10 wickets earning two game points.
