RUGBY fans have been praised for supporting their club during an unprecedented time as Whitehaven Rugby League club has received more than £3000 in charity funds.

Fundraisers Shaun Drinkwater and Simon Taylor have handed over a cheque to Whitehaven RLFC for £3121. Cash to support the club through financial hardship brought on by the coronavirus was raised with a series of raffle draws. The fundraisers are fans of the club and they wanted to give back at a time when the side needs their support.

Drinkwater said: “That’s from three raffles we have done in the past month, it was a great amount.”

Haven fans have got behind the fundraising efforts with 250 tickets sold in the first raffle, 302 in the second and 400 tickets sold in the third.

Drinkwater said: “It’s been brilliant.”

He added that the club have helped the fundraisers promote the raffle.

“Thank you to the directors of Whitehaven RLFC for their support.

The side were thankful to the fundraisers and their generous fans for raising the money. Drinkwater and Taylor are active fans, organising travel for away matches as well as fundraising activities.

A spokesperson for the club’s directors said: “A massive thanks to Shaun and Simon for your efforts the club really appreciate your help.”

The fundraisers are embarking on a new fundraising project this week, a lottery style game where participants pick six numbers. The lucky winner and the club will receive a 50/50 split of the money.
