Workington Reds chairman Les Byers has hailed their loyal fans as they close in on their five-figure target for survival.

Reds launched a Covid-19 survival fund to support the club over the coronavirus crisis as without games they are struggling to keep afloat.

But there is light on the horizon as fundraising has now surpassed the £18,000 mark this week, that takes them another step closer to the £20,000 needed for their future after lockdown

Mr Byers said: “We have been delighted with the response, we have almost reached our £20,000 target.

“Our main appeal has been very successful.

“It secures our future through the summer, but nobody knows when football will return to Borough Park."

The club has been running a number of projects to raise funds, including online competitions, draws and a virtual recreation of a historic Workington Reds match against the Busby Babes, see page 2.

But Mr Byers added that future fundraisers will be needed as it is still unknown when sport will return.

And he is adamant that playing behind closed doors it not really an option, as the club relies on ticket sales and food and drink sales on matchday.

With public events suspended until the government’s social distancing restrictions are lifted, many sports clubs up and down the country are struggling.

“Further fundraising is required long-term. Which is why we are doing the Manchester United game now," he added.

A virtual recreation of Workington Reds v Manchester United will be streamed online on May 30 with ticket proceeds benefitting the club’s survival fund as well as NHS charities.

The Stay at Home record attempt, recreating the historic clash which took place at Borough Park in 1958 is designed to beat the previous home crowd attendance record of 21,500.

A spokesperson for Workington Reds added: “When times improve, and they will improve, the Reds will still be here at Borough Park thanks to all your generous donations."
