A Workington man is set to help lead Great Britain’s Australian football team into this summer’s AFL International Cup.

Myles Hudson, who was born and raised in West Cumbria but now lives in London, has been named vice-captain in the 28-man squad for the competition.

The former rugby player was part of the team which retained their European Championship title last year, when they beat France, Croatia and Ireland to reach the shootout for the prize and did enough to retain the silverware after clinching it three years ago, seeing off Denmark in the18-a-side final.

Many members of that squad are in the group for the build-up to the AFL International Cup, with two other Cumbrians named in Ennerdale’s Mark Ireland and Carlisle’s Michael Sharp.

Head coach Dean Thomas said: “We are really pleased with the makeup of the squad we have been able to put together.

“A large core of this group are entering their fourth international tournament together, and the age and experience demographic breakdown of the squad is something we have been aiming for for a number of years now.

“There is plenty of scope for improvement between now and July for this group.

“We are very much looking forward to seeing them perform on the International Cup stage.”
