Whitehaven Cricket Club are gearing up for an exciting season which will see them field first and second teams in the top two divisions of the Cumbria Cricket League.

The club’s first are set to play in the Premier Division and the seconds will make their debut in Division One.

It will be a year of change as, after four years in charge, Jonathan Stewart has stepped down from the captaincy of the firsts.

Stewart, who led his team to promotion two seasons ago, is succeeded by all-rounder Steve Holliday, with Chadd Pearson set to be his vice-captain.

Pearson, a qualified elite cricket coach, has been appointed as the club’s lead coach and he along with the coaching team will hope to further develop the talent coming through the junior section.

A number of juniors debuted in senior cricket last year and several went on to represent the county and district in their age groups.

Following their title-winning season last year, the seconds will again be led by Jason Spires assisted by opening bowler Stuart Whitelock.

Robbie Skelton continues as thirds captain and will hope his team can challenge in the West Cumbrian League.

Haven’s newly formed girls and ladies’ team will hope to keep up the momentum of a fruitful 2019, which saw them win several tournaments.

The club have engaged Indian professional Ian Dev Singh, an accomplished batsman and spin bowler but also an excellent coach.

Senior nets are held at St Bees School every Sunday from 6.30pm to 8pm, with under-12s to under-15s sessions at the same venue every Friday from 7pm to 8.30pm. Under-11s nets start in March.
