The all-conquering Whitehaven AFC under-10s girls’ team hit new heights when they travelled to Manchester to represent Cumbria in the North West Regional Futsal Finals.

The Lionesses, who were sponsored by LLW Repository Ltd and Meadow Road Tyres and Servicing, made history when they became the first side from the football club to triumph in the county final in Carlisle, going unbeaten through the 20-team tournament.

And they transferred their flying form into the regional competition, where it took the might of an Everton Academy side to end their run after the Cumbrian girls battled through to a round robin decider.

Whitehaven head coach Damian Seath said: “I am immensely proud of these girls.

“What an achievement.

“They gave it absolutely everything and did both the club and county proud.

“It was an amazing experience for both the girls and the coaches.

“How many girls from Cumbria can say they have played against Everton?”

Futsal is a variant of football played on a hard court, smaller than a football pitch using a smaller, low-bounce ball which places the emphasis on creativity and technique.
