Carlisle United have today completed the permanent signing of towering Derby County defender Max Hunt.

The 20-year-old has joined the Cumbrians on an 18-month deal, the terms of which United say are "undisclosed".

The 6ft 6in Hunt has been with Derby for the last two years after joining the Championship side from non-league Matlock.

He has captained the Rams' under-23 side, and had a loan spell with Aldershot in the National League in the first half of this season.

His Brunton Park deal includes a club option to extend it.

It has not yet been confirmed whether Hunt will be available to face Plymouth tomorrow.

United head coach Chris Beech said on the club website: "He’s a big lad with a great attitude and I’m really pleased that he’s joined us, because I do know that there was interest in him from other clubs.

“I also know that Derby were quite happy to retain him for another year, with a view to getting him out on loan again.

"For us to get him on a permanent deal in these circumstances is very good news for us now, and in the future.”

Beech added: “He also has family in the area, he knows Carlisle and he’s looking forward to working with us.

"It’s been good to work with David [Holdsworth, director of football] on this and it’s pleasing to see the club supporting longer contracts, because that gives us time to build and grow.”

Hunt's move comes hours after Aldershot announced the defender was returning to his parent club after 22 appearances for the Shots, who are 17th in the National League.
