Anya McKenzie met her golfing hero, Rory McIlroy, after winning a competition to attend a clinic hosted by the former world No1.

One of just three winners from more than 2,000 entries, the teenager - who plays at Eden Golf Club - was star-struck as she was given advice from the four-time Major champion.

Anya, who also helps out local golf professional Stephen Ling with junior competitions and to mentor other golfing youngsters, was “flabbergasted” when McIlroy arrived to greet her.

Her dad, David, who nominated Anya for the competition, said both McIlroy and his coach, Michael Bannon, were perfect gentlemen throughout.

“He, and his coach, were both really nice,” McKenzie said.

“They both spent time with each of the winners and spoke about how he [McIlroy] has dealt with the highs and lows of the game.”

“Anya found the clinic very insightful and it has given her a huge boost and the impetus to carry on and pursue a career in the game.”
