Workington Reds have a clean bill of health ahead of tonight’s Integro League Cup second-round tie against Mossley at Borough Park (7.45pm kick-off).

Reds are flying high in the NPL North West Division, three points clear at the top and with back-to-back wins against Ossett United and Prescot Cables over the last two weekends.

But their attention will turn to the cup tonight when they welcome Mossley for a game which was scheduled to go ahead last Tuesday before wild weather in West Cumbria forced the fixture to be postponed due to a waterlogged pitch hours before kick-off.

The forecast looks much better today and it is also looking bright for Reds on the injury front, with manager Danny Grainger reporting that there were no fresh injury concerns following Saturday’s game against Prescot.

“Everyone’s fine as far as I’m aware,” he said.

“It’s a clean bill of health and, apart from Ash Kelly being missing for quite some time by the looks of it, we’re looking quite good at the moment.”

Saturday also saw Taylor Charters make his first appearance in a Reds shirt since arriving from Carlisle United on loan and the versatile 18-year-old made a good impression on his new boss.

Grainger said the young midfielder was one of few positives during Reds’ sluggish first half and believes he will only get better with more opportunities.

“I thought he was good today,” Grainger said.

“He picked up some great spaces and probably on another day when we are firing on all cylinders like we were in the second half, with him fresh and going at a back four, he’ll cause real trouble.”

Another player who flourished in the 4-0 win was David Symington, who found the back of the net twice for his eighth and ninth goals of the season after being introduced from the bench.

Grainger added: “That’s Dav, he’s not sulked.

“He was disappointed to not be starting but he understood why; Robbie Hebson came in last week and was fantastic.

“He was on the bench, waited for his chance and when he came on he gave me another headache.”

Division rivals Mossley sit 14th but, despite their middling campaign so far, are one of only four teams to have inflicted defeat on Workington this season.

Reds travelled to Seel Park in September and lost 2-0 in their first league defeat under Grainger which they will be keen to avenge.
