Whitehaven AFC girls’ under-14s have been given a helping hand by the town’s councillors.

The team have secured new sponsorship from Whitehaven Town Council and, after wearing their previous strip for three consecutive seasons, the girls were desperate for a new one.

Parent Ann Marie Houghton contacted the council asked for assistance – and the town councillors were happy to oblige.

Lead coach Jamie Mckendrey said: “This is the girls’ eighth year as a team and yet again we have been blown away by the generosity and support of people in our community.

“We can’t thank them enough.”

Mckendrey gave special mentions to councillors Ryan Redmond, of Sneckyeat North, Charles Maudling, of Whitehaven Central, and the mayor of Whitehaven, Coun Brian O’Kane who all used their ward grants to support the girls’ new kit.

Coun Maudling was on hand on Sunday to present the new gear to the team which the council had helped to pay for.
