WORKINGTON Reds’ FA Trophy First Qualifying round tie at Brighouse Town has been called off.

The West Yorkshire club were expecting to make a pitch inspection tomorrow morning, due to the wet weather.

But the tie has been called off so that the FA can investigate an allegation that Brighouse included an ineligible player in their squad for their last FA Trophy clash.

In that game, Brighouse had beaten neighbours Tadcaster Albion 2-1 to progress.

Until the investigation is completed, it is unsure whether Reds will take on Brighouse or, if they are excluded from the competition, Tadcaster.

A statement from the Workington club read: “Brighouse Town have been charged with an alleged breach of an FA Trophy rule in relation to playing an ineligible player in the previous round of the competition.

“As a consequence of this charge, Saturday’s Buildbase FA Trophy First Round Qualifying tie - Brighouse Town v Workington - due to be played at the Yorkshire Payments Stadium, has been postponed.

“Further detail will be announced in due course.”

It’s the second weekend that Danny Grainger’s men have been left without a game.

Last Saturday’s BetVictor Northern North West clash against Runcorn Linnets was cancelled the night before the game, due to an issue with the ground safety certificate for Borough Park.

On that matter, the club issued a statement that said: “Further to our previous statement, the board of directors can confirm we have held a series of constructive talks during the week with regard to the issue that led to the postponement of the Runcorn Linnets match last Saturday, October 19.

“Discussions are ongoing and we continue to work towards a successful resolution.”

The club will be hoping to have the safety issues cleared up before their scheduled clash at home to Tadcaster Albion on Saturday, November 2.
