Matching the standards Workington Reds set in their impressive midweek FA Trophy win will be the key to them securing three more league points this weekend, believes assistant manager Steve Rudd.

Reds booked their place in the first-round qualifying of the competition by beating Droyslden on Tuesday night but attention turns back to the NPL North West Division and their promotion push tomorrow (3pm kick-off).

Danny Grainger’s side are five points clear at the top of the table and looking to maintain that advantage when Runcorn Linnets visit Borough Park looking to shock the league leaders.

Workington earned a 1-1 draw when they travelled to take on Runcorn last month but Rudd believes they were not at their best that day and is hoping for an improved performance this time around to continue their run of formidable home form this campaign, having won eight and drawn one in all competitions.

“I know we got a draw but we thought we were poor on the day [at Runcorn],” Rudd said.

“Saturday if we’re at it again like we were against Droylsden there’ll be no doubt it’ll be three points.

“We’ve got to make sure that we’re at it, working hard, and the quality will come through.”

Centre-half Jordan Little could come into the squad following his arrival at the club from Cleator Moor Celtic this week, while Sam Smith and Brad Carroll were due to have injuries assessed at training last night after missing out against Droylsden.

If any of the trio are unavailable, Rudd reiterated that the coaching staff are happy with the options at their disposal and the competition for places which has helped them cope with a busy start.

He said: “It’s not going to be 11 lads that win us the league or get us so far in the cup – it’s going to be all 18, 19 of them as a squad.

“Lads are coming in for games and they’re playing really well, which gives us a headache for Saturday.

“Subs coming on, making differences, that’s what they’re there to do.

“Nathan [Waterston], Charlie [Bowman], Harry [Atkinson], they’re not just here to make up the numbers; they’re going on there to do a job and kick on from where we’ve left off.”
