New Annan Athletic vice-captain Tommy Muir has been told to develop more of a selfish streak by manager Peter Murphy.

Striker Muir bagged his first competitive goal of the season in last Saturday's 2-1 victory at Queen’s Park.

And Murphy, who has named Muir as his new vice-captain with Steve Swinglehurst the Black and Golds’ skipper, wants the former Dalbeattie Star man “to be a bit more greedy”.

“Tommy scored his first goal of the season [at Queen’s Park],” said Murphy who played alongside many successful strikers in his career, including Francois Zoko, Danny Graham, Karl Hawley and Glenn Murray.

“He has been working so hard for the team. Since he has come in, he has improved massively, but we need him to be a bit more greedy.

“Sometimes, he needs to put himself first when he’s in goal-scoring positions.”

Scott McLean was also on target for Annan as they beat the Spiders and Murphy said: “Scott has unbelievable ability. It’s about the team trusting him and trying to get him on to the ball.

“But, because they are a new side, they are still learning how to trust each other.

"I’m sure he will score goals, though.”

With Athletic having a free weekend due to the international break, they will next be in action in the Scottish Cup next Saturday when they host Brechin.
