Nick Miller admits the excitement is kicking in as he prepares to go for gold at the World Athletics Championships.

With the event in Doha, Qatar, set to start today, Scotby hammer thrower Miller is finalising his preparations before he competes next week.

It’s been a far from ideal build-up for Miller, though, with the 26-year-old having been forced to relocate away from UK Athletics’ holding camp in Dubai, instead, training in Turkey due to what he deemed to be inadequate hammer facilities.

But the Border Harrier insists he is in good shape.

The reigning Commonwealth Games gold medallist told The News & Star: “Although the rest of the GB team have been at the Dubai training camp, I’ve been in Turkey because there wasn’t a suitable training facility for me in Dubai.

"I’ve missed out on a bit [by] not being part of the team, but I’ve been able to focus on what I need to do which has been good.

"Training here with Tore [Gustafsson, Miller’s coach] has gone well.

"I’m slowing it down now in the lead up to the actual championships and, at the moment, I’m feeling in good shape and throwing is going well."

Last April, on the Gold Coast, Australia, Miller secured Commonwealth Games gold in style, throwing 80.26m as he broke the Commonwealth Games record.

Meanwhile, this year, the former William Howard School student has won a fifth British title, as well as events in Brazil, Greece and Finland.

"When I join the team in Doha, that’s when I expect the excitement and adrenalin will kick in," Miller said.

"On the whole, this season has gone well and I want to build on that and show what I know I’m capable of.

"It’s all on the day, so I’m hoping to be in a positive frame of mind, feeling fit and then aiming to throw the hammer as far as I can.

"Doing well at these championships would be a massive confidence boost, especially with the Olympics coming up next year."

Qualifying for the final for the hammer World Championships will take place on Tuesday afternoon, while the final will be held the following day.

But, before then, American sprinter Justin Gatlin, pole-vaulter Holly Bradshaw and long-jump star Christian Taylor will all go for glory.
