Milestone man Mike Jones has been described as the perfect example to Carlisle United’s young players.

The midfielder made his 500th senior appearance in the 3-1 defeat to Bradford.

Jones, 32, has chalked up the impressive tally with United and previous clubs including Tranmere, Shrewsbury, Sheffield Wednesday, Crawley and Oldham.

Manager Steven Pressley said of his achievement: “It says everything about him.

“I talked about that in the meeting on the morning of [Saturday’s game].

“I said that to play 500 games is an incredible achievement, and I think it very much typifies what he is: a player that looks after himself, prepares properly, is a great professional and a great example for our young players in the squad.”

Another midfielder, Canice Carroll could return to the squad for Tuesday’s Leasing.com Trophy game against Wolves’ under-21s. The loan man has recovered from an ankle problem. Pressley said he will use the trophy game to field some of his fringe players.

On Carroll he said: “He’s fit, and he travelled with us [to Bradford] – I just didn’t change any of the personnel from last Tuesday against Forest Green.

“He comes back into the reckoning.”
