Penrith 0 Carlisle Utd 4: Trialist Isaac Buckley-Ricketts was among the goals as Carlisle United beat Penrith 4-0 in their second pre-season friendly.

The former Manchester City winger grabbed the Blues' second goal in his bid to win a deal.

Hallam Hope was also on target in the first half, with youngsters Keighran Kerr and Josh Galloway scoring after the break.

The game saw a 45-minute debut for Aston Villa midfielder Lewis Brunt, who has joined the Cumbrians with a view to a season-long loan.

Trialists Elliott Reeves and Tyrone Duffus also got another outing but some senior players, like Byron Webster, Mike Jones, Jack Iredale, Stefan Scougall, Christie Elliott and Adam Collin, were rested.

Carlisle moved before the game to quash speculation about keeper Collin's future, saying the Cumbrian was not involved again because manager Steven Pressley intended to give Louis Gray three pre-season outings, with Collin to feature in United's final three friendlies. "He is going nowhere," the club added on Twitter.

In-demand frontman Hope then opened the scoring inside the first minute, latching onto a loose ball and chipping stranded keeper Dan Staples.

Reeves could have scored in the fifth minute but shot over the bar.

Harry McKirdy showed some bright touches and runs but United, captained by Nathaniel Knight-Perival, struggled for fluency in the middle stage of the half.

Brunt, 18, struggled to impose himself on his first Blues showing, while Penrith nearly levelled when ex-United striker Max Brown did well against Duffus to feed Matt Broadley, before Matty Moynan's attempt was deflected wide.

Carlisle controlled possession for the most part, with Jon Mellish making some good runs at left-back, but Pressley's side saw a number of wayward passes check their progress.

Eventually a diagonal ball saw young right-back Jarrad Branthwaite get inside his man and tee up Peterborough man Buckley-Ricketts, who slotted home from the middle of the box.

McKirdy and Jack Bridge then failed with free-kicks as the Cumbrians looked for a third before the break.

Carlisle then sent on an entirely new side for the second half, comprised of youth players plus first-year pro Kerr, with academy coaches Eric Kinder and Mark Birch taking charge from the dugout.

And it was striker Kerr who made it three in the 47th minute, finishing confidently after a fine through-ball from Josh Galloway.

Galloway then got on the scoresheet after 64 minutes as United broke from a corner. As the ball was fed forward to Galloway, he touched it past the onrushing keeper outside his box then got to the ball ahead of defenders to slot it home.

Carlisle could have had more goals in a lively showing from their teenage prospects.

Penrith were denied a late consolation when Chris Wraight, having gone close from 25 yards, saw a close-range attempt kept out by youth keeper Isaac Robinson.
