Carlisle Cricket Club skipper Marc Brown is looking for a response from his side tomorrow after suffering their first Cumbria Cricket League defeat of the season.

Beaten by Premier Division champions Cockermouth, the city side travel to Millom, still hoping to chase down leaders Furness.

Brown said: "We want to bounce back quickly.

"We lost to a very good side on Saturday but we are still in the hunt.

"I suppose, with hindsight, I might have batted against Cockermouth but we have been chasing well and our bowlers have been in form, so I put them in.

"To be fair, they batted well and we weren’t as good as we have been bowling. I thought maybe we were unlucky on a couple of decisions, too.

"But their two spinners bowled particularly well. They were good in the field and we just didn’t score as quickly as we might have, but at the end of the day, they are a very good side.

"The important thing, though, is to bounce back. Millom won’t be easy because they can be a dangerous side.

"I expect them to be stronger than they were last month when we beat them by 86 runs at Edenside.

"We keep an unchanged side, which is good, because I know everybody wants to make amends for last week’s defeat."

Carlisle now trail Furness by 12 points and have Cockermouth 12 points behind them. Key games to come include Furness v Carlisle and Cockermouth v Furness.

All the top four got runs for Cockermouth, headed by Greg Platten (69) and skipper Alex Grainger (63) and they reached 233-6 in their 50 overs.

Carlisle professional Mike Slack was the most successful Carlisle bowler, taking 3-52.

Opener Ben Davidson anchored the Carlisle reply and was last out for 84 after he and Slack (42) had put on 75 for the first wicket.

But Alex Raybould (25) was the one to offer substantial support and they were bowled out in the 49th over for 194.

Spinners Matthew Sempill (4-60) and Mark Middleton (3-60) bowled really well for Cockermouth.

Wigton secured their third win of the season when they beat Whitehaven by two wickets in a tight game at the Playground.

Skipper Nico Watt (3-39) and professional Chris Hodgson (3-41) helped bowl out Whitehaven for 141.

It wasn’t a gimme as Wigton had to work hard before they reached 144-8, indebted to a match-winning 49 from Watt.

They are back at Lowmoor Road tomorrow, taking on champions Cockermouth.

Keswick’s fine run of form in the league ended at Millom where they lost by 86 runs.

Millom made 257-6 led by Graham Dawson (78) and Keswick were bowled out for 171, where the innings depended much on professional Geeth Kumara (65) and Glen Weightman (48).

Tomorrow, Keswick visit Dalton but will probably have their sights on Sunday’s Higson Cup semi-final when they host the bottom side Egremont.

You can imagine “no complacency” being the mantra in the Keswick dressing room ahead of the game as they go out against an Egremont side still to win in the league.

But Egremont will probably have most of the neutrals rooting for them, keen to see them enjoy something from what looks like being a brief stay in the top flight.

They will have been encouraged by their efforts last week when they only lost by two wickets against Dalton.

In Coady Scott, they have a more than useful all-rounder whose 38 not out and 5-65 almost swung the game Egremont’s way at Dalton.

The other semi-final on Sunday sees Furness entertaining Cleator – 24 hours after they meet in the league in west Cumbria.

The other league games tomorrow are Egremont v Workington and Lindal Moor v Whitehaven.
